Web Site Copywriting

The search engines and your visitors want quality content. With your keyword list in hand, you will start by organizing your site and then writing lots of quality web site copy.

Organizing your Site

Before the web site copywriting begins, organize your content. Your copy should be relevant, focused and should make sense to your visitors. Creating a working site map is a great way to organize your copy and your web site.

Writing Web Site Copy

You know your business better than anyone, now it's time to effectively relay that to the search engines and your audience through your copywriting. To be effective you need a minimum of 2 pages of copy for each of your keyword phrases. Preferably, each of these pages should contain 250 words or more of relevant, quality copy.

Write naturally -
Your audience wants quality and so do the search engines. Now more than ever, the search engines prefer web sites with copy that flows naturally and does not over do it with keywords. It's best to write with your audience in mind first, don't even think about keyword placement yet. Just write naturally, as if you are talking to your potential clients or customers.

Write an appropriate number of words -
The actual amount of copy that should be written for your site depends on the subject matter. You should write as many words as it takes to effectively make your point, but not so many that your copy veers off-topic. Although there is not a magical number of words, I recommend at least 250 words per page. The search engines seem to prefer sites with lots of quality copy.

Keep your copy relevant -
Keep your web site copy focused and relevant. It is important that the copy of each webpage maintain relevance to its targeted keyword phrases. When writing about a subject you know very well, it's easy to get carried away. Before you know it, you may find yourself writing copy that could destroy the overall relevance of your page. When you feel the need for writing detailed copy that is off-topic for that particular page, give it a whole page of it's own and link to it.

Edit your copy for keyword phrases -
Once you have written your copy, it is time to check the position of your keyword phrases. The goal is to have keyword rich web copy that is natural and not over-optimized. Part 2 of Web Site Copywriting explains keyword placement.
