Tag Optimization

Certain tags of your html code are searched out by the search engine spiders with the idea that their contents are a good indicator of your sites relevance (and they should be). Optimizing these tags with your keywords will help the search engines decide for which keyword searches your page should rank. Ultimately tag optimization can help increase your search engine ranking.

Tag Optimization is divided into 3 parts:
Part 1 - Meta Tags and Alt Tags (least important tags)
Part 2 - Title Tag Optimization (extremely important tags).
Part 3 - Header Tag Optimization (very important tags).

Meta Tags and Alt Tags

Meta and Alt tags are the least important of the html tags. These tags do not carry much weight with the search engines (some search engines don't consider them at all). The meta tags and alt tags were (and are) spammed so easily and so often that they aren't considered by most engines to be a trustworthy measure of page relevance. Regardless, these tags do have a purpose and are worth your optimization efforts.

It is important that you Do Not Spam these tags. Consider this from a search engine point of view. As a search engine I might be automatically suspicious of these tags, afterall they have been abused so much that I can't trust them anymore. Even if I don't consider them relevant, I will take a peek at them anyway, if I see that they are spammed, it will raise a big red flag for the site. I would look very hard to find the rest of the spam, because if someone was dumb enough to spam these tags, they have most likely spammed in other ways as well.

Let's avoid the red flag and optimize these tags properly and effectively.

Meta Tag Optimization

Meta Tags were once the first concern of SEO. Even though their importance has dramatically declined, some search engines still use the Keyword and Description meta tags for search engine rankings.

KeyWord meta tag -

  • Use keyword phrases instead of single keywords.
  • Each keyword phrase should be found on that page.
  • Use commas between keyword phrases with NO spaces.
  • Do not waste space by using words such as if or at.

Description meta tag -

  • Use keyword phrases in your description.
  • Give each page its own description.
  • The description should make sense.
  • From 150-200 characters is good for this tag.

Alt Tag Optimization

The alt tag is actually not a tag at all. What we commonly refer to as an alt tag is actually the alt attribute of the image tag.

Good reasons to use and optimize the alt tag -

1) Alt tags make for a better user experience. If any of visitors use a text browser, or if your images do not display for any reason, the text of the alt tag will display in place of the image.

2) Alt tags make for proper html code. Your webpages cannot validate without the use of the alt attribute in your image tags.

3) A few search engines still consider the contents of the alt as relevant for ranking.

Good reasons not to spam the alt -
1) Should the content of your alt display instead your image, the spamming will look really dumb to your viewer. It isn't worth looking dumb!

2) If a search engine (even those who don't count the alt as relevant) sees a spammed alt tag it could raise a red flag, like we reviewed earlier.

How to optimize the alt tag -

  • Use no more than 2 keyword phrases per alt.
  • Use no more than one sentence per alt.
  • Make sense of the alt. Use either header type wording (Alt Tag Optimization) or use a full sentence (How to effectively optimize your alt tags).

Part 2 - Title Tag Optimization (extremely important tags).
Part 3 - Header Tag Optimization (very important tags).
